Pune Pioneers FC Bring Professional Football Experience to the City with Avijit Ghosh Appointment

The appointment of former East Bengal and Royal Wahingdoh goalkeeper Avijit Ghosh reflects Pune Pioneers FC’s ambition to strengthen specialist coaching and contribute to the development of football talent in Pune.

Pune’s football ecosystem continues to create opportunities for young players seeking structured training and a pathway towards competitive football. As academies invest in better coaching structures and specialist development, attracting experienced professionals from across the country is becoming an important part of that process.

Pune Pioneers FC have taken another step in this direction with the appointment of Avijit Ghosh as their new Goalkeeping Coach.

A former professional goalkeeper who represented clubs including East Bengal FC, Air India FC and Royal Wahingdoh FC, Ghosh brings experience from India’s professional football circuit and several years of specialist coaching. His arrival also represents the movement of football knowledge and coaching experience from one established football region to another.

Bringing experience from Kolkata football to Pune

Kolkata has a long-established football culture, with competitive club structures and a strong tradition of developing players. Ghosh’s career has been closely connected to this environment.

He progressed through clubs including Site Athletic Club, SAIL Football Club and George Telegraph before joining Tata Football Academy, where he spent the period between 2003 and 2007.

His professional career subsequently included East Bengal FC, Air India FC, Mumbai Tigers, Sreebhumi Samiti, Aryan FC and Royal Wahingdoh FC.

At East Bengal, he was part of the squad that won the Federation Cup in 2009–10 and the Calcutta Football League Premier Division in 2010. He also participated in the AFC Cup in 2010.

His experience with Royal Wahingdoh included the 2014–15 I-League season, when the club finished third. These experiences provided exposure to different professional football environments before he moved into specialist coaching.

Strengthening specialist coaching in Pune

One of the important aspects of Ghosh’s appointment is the specific responsibility attached to his role.

He will oversee goalkeeper development across all age groups at Pune Pioneers FC, working with players in both the residential academy in Wagholi and the non-residential evening academy programme.

Goalkeeping is a specialised position that requires dedicated coaching attention. While goalkeepers are part of the same team structure as outfield players, their responsibilities and development requirements are distinct.

For an academy, having a specialist coach responsible for the position across different age groups can help establish greater continuity in the development process.

Pune Pioneers FC’s decision to bring in a coach with professional playing experience reflects its intention to strengthen this area of its coaching structure.

A coaching career built across different competitions

Ghosh began his coaching journey in 2017 and has since worked with a number of football organisations and clubs.

His coaching experience includes Hooghly District Sports Association, Kalyani Football League, Kolkata Soccer Academy, Suruchi Sangha, Khidderpore SC, Kalighat MS, City AC and George Telegraph FC.

He was also associated with SKM Sports Foundation in the AIFF U-17 Youth League in 2026.

His assignments have covered different levels of football, including youth competitions and senior club environments. He holds an AIFF C Coaching Licence.

This background provides a combination of playing and coaching experience that can be valuable in an academy environment.

An opportunity for the next generation

The initial response to Ghosh’s sessions at Pune Pioneers FC has been encouraging. Players have responded positively, and fellow coaches have observed improvements in the goalkeepers’ work.

While long-term development requires consistency and patience, the early response offers a positive start to the new coaching appointment.

The club’s wider objective is to provide young footballers with an environment in which specialist coaching forms part of their overall development. For goalkeepers, that means having dedicated attention within the academy structure.

Ghosh’s relocation from Kolkata to Pune also highlights the professional opportunities that can emerge when football organisations look beyond their immediate geographical networks to strengthen their coaching teams.

Building Pune’s football future

The development of a city’s football ecosystem depends on several factors: access to facilities, opportunities to compete, structured academy programmes and the quality of coaching available to young players.

Specialist appointments such as this can contribute to that process by bringing experience from established football environments into local development structures.

For Pune Pioneers FC, Ghosh’s arrival is another investment in the coaching side of the academy. For young goalkeepers in the city, it creates an opportunity to work with a coach who has experienced professional football as a player and subsequently built a career in specialist coaching.

The challenge now is to turn that experience into sustained player development and help more young footballers in Pune prepare for the next level of the game.
