  1. What draws you to poetry as a creative form, and how do you feel it uniquely expresses emotions and ideas?

Poetry has been my go-to medium when it comes to expressing my inner journey. It often uses fewer words than prose to convey deeper meaning through vivid imagery. It engages the reader's senses, not just their intellect, through sound, rhythm and imagery. Its interpretation is beautifully subjective.

2. What inspired the central themes of your poetry, and how did they shape the tone and structure of your work?

My poems are centered around the themes of hope, healing and the human spirit. Many of them are micropoems, as I enjoy conveying the essence of my thoughts in the most concise manner possible. A lot of my work is written in free verse, which allows my emotions to flow naturally.

3. Poetry often invites readers to discover their own meaning. How do you balance conveying your intended message with leaving space for personal interpretation?

The beauty of poetry lies in its openness to subjective interpretation. Writing poetry has been a very organic process for me. I don’t make a conscious effort to balance between conveying my intended meaning and allowing room for individual interpretation—it happens naturally.

4. How does your personal journey and background influence the imagery and themes in your poems?

I write poetry on themes such as hope, healing, the human spirit, life, death and everything in between. Many of my poems are born from my experiences as a doctor. I often write about the vulnerabilities and joys that come with my profession. Being a COVID-19 frontliner allowed me to introspect deeply and empathize more with my patients, while reflecting on the meaning of life.

5. In what ways do you use poetry as a means of reflecting on or commenting on the world around you?

Through my poetry, I explore different perspectives to reflect on the world around me. Often, the outer world mirrors our inner world. Poetry helps me channel the surrounding chaos into creative expression. It allows me to find beauty in the everyday mundane.

6. Can you share any writing rituals or practices that help you cultivate creativity and refine your craft as a poet?

I usually write when I am by myself. Solitude gives me the opportunity to reflect, introspect and explore different perspectives on life and the experiences it brings.
